This year’s tenth stop on the PGA TOUR’s Nationwide Tour is The Henrico County Open presented by Saxon Capital, Inc. Hosted at The Dominion Club on May 15-21, the tournament held a total purse of $450,000. The field was made up of some of the top names on the Nationwide Tour, and make no mistake about it, these guys can play.
Of the past ten winners of the event, seven are now playing on the PGA TOUR. Far from being considered “minor league” to the PGA TOUR, the Nationwide events draw the best players from around the world looking to elevate their game to the next level.
The Henrico County Open has all four rounds televised on The Golf Channel and remains the only professional golf tournament that is sponsored by a municipality on the PGA TOUR, Champions Tour or Nationwide Tour. The event is an excellent venue to showcase the highlights and potential of Henrico County to a national audience and always draws large numbers of spectators for the event.
While it would be easy to elaborate upon the elite level of golf the spectators expect and experience, an additional bonus of hosting a Nationwide Tour event emerged from charitable benefits and contributions. Area charities experienced tremendous generosity as a result of the Henrico County Open.
The Virginia Home for Boys and Girls, located in Henrico County, was recently announced to be the recipient of a check for $10,000 from the PGA TOUR Wives Association. The Virginia Home for Boys and Girls is also the Henrico County Open’s own charity, and the organization is the beneficiary of proceeds from the tournament each year. The Virginia Home for Boys and Girls was chosen as the recipient of this donation out of a list of more than 60 charities across the nation.
